What's on my desk right now?
My car keys and phone. Two spiral notebooks with notes on a current play I’m working on and a general “Theatre Tasks To-Do” list on it. A new credit card I need to activate as the old one expires soon. Fred Meyer coupons. Nursing Union newsletter. A hand-town page form a amgazine with handwritten instructions on how to turn on the PS4 and get Minecraft going. Employer benefit enrollment instructions that make no fucking sense. A broken wristwatch with the label “Fix me” on it. Rainbow sharpies. Colored pencils. Scissors of various shapes sizes and colors. SCotch Tape. My sewing machine with doo-dads on it. Blank envelopes and stamps and labels. glue sticks. A happy kitty sticker. A stapler. My laptop. A 3-hole punch. A notecard with the latest passwords written on it.
My desk is uninteresting right now because I just cleaned it! I’ve organized the home office quite a bit and have different shelves. A whole set of shelves for theatre work with my wig/costuming/sewing supplies and notebooks from the recent design work I’ve done. Another set of shelves with nursing work stuff, public school fiels, old joirnals and notebooks and photo albums, etc. On top of the shelves are frame photos of shows I’ve done—family photos—some Barbies from the kids in the neighborhood who last played at our house—tiny Star Trek figurines—and The List from the 50 Dates with Myself…which I finished…ten years ago this month!!! Holy shit. Wow. I’ve grown. And aged. And wisened up. And also am very tired.
The constellation of of family and creative life continues to coexist on this IKEA desk. Because the desk is so clean right now I might actually find a scrap of energy to sit down and do something creatively productive—like update my website! And (checks to-do list)… Sign up for New Play Exchange…and work on the play draft…maybe finish that inspiration board with pictures of moms in comedy I find totally fucking cool i.e. Amy Poehler, Michelle Buteau, and others.
Stage directions: Marie sits briefly in silence looking at clean office. Gets up quitely. Walks across hall to bedroom. Collapses on bed. Ignores laundry.
